Jan 22, Colombo: Only three weeks into the new year, over 2,000 cases of dengue fever have been reported in the country, the Epidemiology Unit of the Health Department disclosed.

A majority of the 2,169 cases reported until January 20th, was from the Colombo and Gampaha districts. There were 311 reported cases in Colombo District and 317 cases have been reported in the Gampaha district.

Jaffna and Vavuniya districts in Northern region also have reported a large number of cases compared to the rest of the country. There were 234 cases in Jaffna district and 256 cases in Vavuniya district.

Compared to the previous years, the disease has already surged to epidemic proportions this year. However, there were no deaths reported from Dengue yet.

Meanwhile, 631 confirmed cases of pandemic Influenza A/H1N1 (Swine Flu) have been reported by 15th January 2010 out of a total of 2285 samples at the Medical Research Institute and there were 46 deaths due to the H1N1 flu, the Epidemiology Unit said.

The first death due to influenza A/H1N1 in the island nation occured in the hill city of Kandy last November. The first H1N1 case was detected in Sri Lanka in June 2009.
