Two of the greatest spinners of this era will soon team up to teach some of their magic to a younger generation of bowlers. If all goes well, Muttiah Muralitharan and Anil Kumble will be coaches at an academy that Kumble wants to set up, possibly in Bangalore.
“It is in the pipeline,” Muralitharan told The Indian Express. “But it is Anil’s call because he is arranging things for setting up the academy in Bangalore. If he does, I would like to be part of it. I am not planning a career in coaching but if Anil starts his academy, I will be happy to go.”
Kumble and Murali who have a staggering 1,419 wickets between them in Tests, first discussed plans to coach together over two years ago. Now that he has retired from Test cricket, Murali is likely to find the time to join the project.
Kumble, Murali said, “has been a very good friend for a long time”.
When contacted by phone from Colombo, Kumble confirmed that plans for the academy were taking shape, and that he was keen to have Murali and himself coach together.
“I have been in touch with Muralitharan. However, after his retirement from Tests, I have not been able to speak to him. At the moment he must be busy with all the felicitations and he truly deserves it. Once he is free and I have time on my hands, we will sit down and chalk out plans in detail,” Kumble said.
