A special inquiry has been initiated by the Kandy police against the OIC of the Kalawanchikudi Police Station for allegedly verbally abusing and obstructing the duties of policemen on duty on Dalada Veediya in Kandy, when he was prevented from arbitrarily crossing the road other than on a zebra crossing.
The OIC from Kalawanchikudi who happened to be in Kandy, in Dalada Veediya, wished to cross it, totally disregarding the sign-boards that warned the pedestrians not to do so and ignoring the advice by the uniformed Policemen who were on duty there and instead had his way after threatening those officers, scolding in filth and obstructing them in discharging their duties.
DIG Central Province Pujitha Jayasundera ordered Kandy Police to strictly enforce the law against the alleged officer. During the last two weeks Kandy police produced about 600 pedestrians who crossed the road at unmarked points and fined them Rs.750 each. Reliable sources say that an inquiry was commenced by the Higher Officers in Kandy Police against the OIC Manawadu of Kalwanchikudi.
