Police arrested a private bus driver who allegedly drove the vehicle recklessly at high speed endangering commuters lives at Slave Island. Police in response to a call to the Police Emergency Service arrested the driver.
According to Police, two buses on 138 route were racing from Maharagama to Fort Wednesday evening. A commuter traveling in one of buses phoned 119 at Thimbirigasyaya and informed the buses’ details. The Police Emergency Service directed the matter to the Slave Island Police Station.
According to police that commuter had complained of the two buses traveling at high speed. The complainant was in one bus and the other bus overtook it from the left, over the pavement. Pedestrians ran away in fear of being run over.
The bus, the complainant was in was traveling at a very high speed at Thummulla and when commuters asked the bus crew to travel slowly and carefully, they had scolded the commuters telling them to get out if they were unable to travel in the bus.
Slave Island Police station was on alert with the information received on 119 and stopped the two buses near the Inland Revenue Department. Police after taking the driving licence had instructed them to unload the commuters and return to the Police station.
Later, Police produced one bus driver before Colombo Additional Magistrate Chandanee Meegoda.
She ordered the driver to be remanded until August 3. She also ordered to produce the other bus driver before Court on August 3.
