Two Indian passengers bound for Singapore were nabbed by Government Intelligence Officers while they were trying to smuggle in Rs.17 Million worth of foreign currency yesterday (29), in the early hours of the morning, at Katunayake International Airport.
After seeing the two suspects hanging around the transit lounge airport security had become suspicious and they had been subjected to a search whereby the said amount of cash had been found concealed in their hand luggage. They had been handed over to the customs authorities for further investigations. The Foreign Currency brought in by them is said to have included Euros, Swedish Kroeners, Australian Dollars as well as U.S Dollars.
Customs Superintendents- Parakrama Basnayake, C. Perimpanayagam and Upali Abeywardena are conducting further investigations under the direction by U.G.Kulathileke – Asst. Director of Customs.
