Third Under 20 Group of 60’s Zahira College Rugby Sevens
By M. Shamil Amit
Zahira Rugby Sevens Under 20 inter-schools rugby tournament organized by the Group of 60’s of Zahira is scheduled to be worked off on August 1 (Sunday) at the Royal Sports Complex in Reid Avenue.
This was revealed by tournament committee chairman Tony Amit at a press briefing held at the college hall. Tony briefing the media said it was due to the success of the previous two tournaments that we were able to have it for the third time.
The Zahira 7’s conducted for the third successive year is sponsored by Phoenix Industries Ltd, Diamond Food Products and Allied Trading International.
The principal of Zahira T.K. Azoor was in attendance to give his support and encourage the organizers. The principal in his brief speech stressed “it is a sorry state that at present there is lot of revenge taking place in a game when it was played in the true spirit of the sport in the bygone days.
Azoor who himself was a fine rugby player during his hey days having also represented Royal against traditional rivals Trinity in 1972 stated that we were told to for the ball and not the man which unfortunately is happening today.
The game has developed leaps and bounds but if there is no discipline it does not augur well for the sports of rugby. During our playing days it did not matter who wins or lose but our thought was to respect the opponents and take up victory and defeat in the real spirit.
So what I expect is true sportsmanship from all the participants who are contesting in the Zahira 7’s for which we have strived hard to make it  a reality for the third successive year.
The tournament which is being held for the third successive year will see 13 teams in fray which includes the reigning Under 20 schools rugby champions St Peter’s and Isipathana who are the defending champions.
Isipathana in fact was also the winner of the inaugural tournament played in 2008. They will be looking forward to make it three in a row while St Peter’s who have won two sevens tournament earlier in the year will be hoping to lift their third sevens title for the year 2010.
The 13 teams participating are divided into four groups of three teams each in Group ‘A’, ‘C’ and ‘D’ and four teams in Group ‘B’ The tournament is scheduled to be kicked of at 8.30 a.m. with finals to be worked off from 4.00 p.m. onwards.
The teams: Group ‘A’ – Isipathana, CWW Kannangara, Ananda. ‘B’ – Royal Colombo, Piliyandala Central, Science, Zahira. ‘C’ – St Joseph’s, Bandarawela Combined Schools, Prince of Wales. ‘D’ – St Peter’s, Vidyartha, Royal Panadura.
