UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake yesterday said the party seniors should take the act of self-immolation of its supporter Rienzie Algama seriously and work towards the betterment of the party.
He said the reasons for his act should be determined in addition to the police investigations.
Rienzie who set himself on fire after being dejected by the crisis in the UNP died the following day.
Mr. Attanayake told a news conference that the party seniors should think about the party seriously.
The UNP general secretary said party members should come together when resolving the issues facing today. He said no one should leave room for the division of the party as its unity was Rienzie’s wish.
He considered UNP headquarters as his ancestral home,” Mr. Attanayake said.
UNP General Secretary said the matter would be taken up for discussion when party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe returns today.
He said the police should also conduct an inquiry on the matter.
He recalled that no one should insult and criticise Mr. Rienzie as there was no vested interests whatsoever behind his act.
“This is a serious matter as it was the first time a person ended his life for the sake of a political party,” he said.
Mr. Attanayake pointed out that the party would also take steps to help Mr. Rienzie’s family as they need more support.
